Kata Mijatović
Performance Disappearing Word

Stellarium, Comets from REM Sleep is a new exhibition project by Kata Mijatović created specifically for the space of the Cosmological Centre in Križevci.

The unconscious, or rather dreams as a manifestation of that suppressed register of human consciousness, is a constant theme in the artist’s work. Once more, the intervention is based on dreams selected from her online project Dream Archive (www.arhivsnova.hr), focusing on the reconsideration of the complex relationships between the conscious and the unconscious, and the interactions between the visible outside world and the invisible inner mental spaces. The main driver of meaning here is the location itself, namely the content of the building around and in which everything happens. Kata Mijatović effectively draws the observatory into her narrative, assimilating the symbolism of that object not so much its function: a place where distant extraterrestrial elements and systems are visually brought closer to the observer through an optical apparatus, thus serving a metaphor for an undefined cosmic connection between individual consciousness and the universe.

The attempt to connect the phenomenon of dreams and the reality of the universe here is suggested by a hypothetical analogy reflected in the exhibition’s title – Stellarium, Comets from REM Sleep. Dreams which occur in this stage of sleep are as mysterious as comets because they fall “out of nowhere”; yet, the cognitive material they are composed of is actually fragments of memory, remnants of experiences imprinted in consciousness, peripheral data stored somewhere along the way inadvertently, which the psychic apparatus processes and shapes into dreams, guided by the ever-present dynamics of wish fulfilment and its censorship.

The artist will stage the performance Disappearing Word at the opening.

The central focus of Kata Mijatović’s artistic practice is the reconsideration of complex relationships between the conscious and the unconscious, and the interactions between the visible outside world and the invisible inner mental spaces. The starting point in her works is the dichotomy between these two psychic spaces, their interaction and the possibility or impossibility of their mutual communication. A distinct segment within the framework of this research consists of works/projects with dreams as the basic structural and motivating content. Engaging with the dream phenomenon, these works problematize the perception of reality in the context of conscious-unconscious relationships and explore the function of the unconscious in constructing reality.
