Fourth edition of the international conference Fast Forward: Women in Photography – WOMEN, PHOTOGRAPHY, CONFLICT

The presentations will showcase how female photographers have operated in wartime situations and other crisis contexts, providing new insights in this underexplored field.

As the violation of women’s human rights is one of the prominent aspects dominating conflict zones, this topic resonates with many realities that women throughout the region face (or have faced), including the countries of the South Caucasus and the Balkans. Over the years, women photographers have been active in documenting human rights abuses, advocating for women, and initiating actual changes in conflict areas or post-conflict situations. However, in contemporary photography historiography, their contributions are often overlooked. The discourse surrounding conflict photography typically centres on the dramatic scenes depicted in war photography and is predominantly influenced by a traditional male viewpoint.
