Location: Ribnjak Youth Centre, Zagreb

Workshop hours: 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM (with a break from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM)

The workshop titled “Equally Legible to All,” seeks to evoke the memory of the history of exhibiting socially engaged art at the Art Pavilion between the two World Wars, where significant solo exhibitions of George Grosz, Käthe Kollwitz, and several of the most notable exhibitions of the Earth Association of Artists were held in the 1930s. The workshop will commence with an exploration of the works of these artists, who addressed pressing social issues of their time and consistently advocated for the marginalised and underprivileged segments of society. Using simple linear drawing, they aimed to create a visual language that, according to Krsto Hegedušić, was “equally legible to all irrespective of their cultural and aesthetic background” and “understandable to the general populace in the broadest sense.” The selected drawings and prints from the mentioned exhibitions at the Art Pavilion will serve as a basis for comparison with the present moment, prompting the recognition of concealed and consideration of evident inequalities in current social relations, while also inspiring us to explore ways in which drawing can be used today as a tool for storytelling and a medium for communicating with a broad audience.

The workshop is open to students of Fine Arts Academies, design students, young artists, and anyone interested who possess basic drawing skills.
