Neven Bilić – The Big Muntius

Art in Front of the Art Pavilion cycle

In the forthcoming instalment of the programme of art in the open air, devised in order to maintain the exhibition work of the Art Pavilion notwithstanding the damage inflicted on the structure of the building by the earthquake, we are presenting an exhibition of the work of the renowned Croatian sculptor Neven Bilić, The Big Muntius. This is the fourth and final exhibition in this cycle during the current year.

The ambiental installation The Big Muntius is named after Professor Muntius, a minor figure in the SF novel Solaris of Stanisław Lem. This is an oversized modular work composed of segments of polymer joined together with valves and spikes that tend towards an endless monochrome structure.  The installation recalls the chain that in the words of Boris Geiner, author of the essay in the exhibition catalogue represents “the unknown black force of menacing appearance that has blocked up the entry into the Art Pavilion in Zagreb”, which Greiner has symbolically referred to as “the castle in which culture slumbers.

Thanks to the Art in front of the Art Pavilion series, visitors will have a unique opportunity to see for the first time this monumental work of Bilić’s.

After graduation from the School of Applied Art and Design, Neven Bilić (1972) took a degree in sculpture in the class of Stanko Jančić at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, where today he works as associate professor in the sculpture department.  He has exhibited at numbers of solo and collective shows at home and abroad and has received several prizes for his work.
